Sunday, Apr. 4th - Shooting Range Field Trip

We’re going to the range!  Price is $10 for two hours of safe, coached shooting, 100+ rds. of ammo, and a safe place to shoot.  Two groups: 1-3pm or 3-5pm.

This event will use a lottery system: Watch your e-mail for signup info.

This event requires recent, thorough gun safety training (e.g. any RSSK training events) – honor system.  E-mail us if you aren’t trained but want to be.

==============================================================

National Handgun Certification Series – March 25th to April 8th.

RSSK will offer a nationally-recognized handgun course starting in the end of March, extending into April.  The course is the NRA pistol course, which is a wide survey of handgun knowledge, including a shooting range portion, which is sure to significantly bolster the knowledge of even very experienced shooters.  It generates a certificate that’s recognized all over the US, including in many states to fulfill the training requirement for a concealed weapons permit or other state training requirements (Oregon, for example).

The course will be offered in a series of steps.  They’ll be night classes during the week (except the range day), and they will be repeated twice (two days in a row) so you’re sure to be able to make it to one of them.  They will last maximum 2 hours each time, but it’s hard to pin down a number (I haven’t taught these classes before).

An initial step to this program (I’m calling this “Step 0”) is the basic RSSK safety/good shooting training.  This is required for the certification, but will be offered as a step in the training process.  I will publish a list of things you’ll need to know from that class so you’ll be able to judge whether you should go (in case you had the basic class in last year’s Paideia or would like a refresher for some other reason).  I’ll also strongly encourage you to make it to this class if you can – everyone can benefit from thinking about the shooting fundamentals.

Step 1 and Step 2 cover additional information the NRA wants you to know to graduate their course.  These sections will greatly broaden your knowledge of guns, handguns in particular.

Step 3 is a range exercise, and we’ll go out to the range and shoot.  You’ll be shooting about as much as on a regular RSSK trip.

Because the course generates a credential good for the training requirement for concealed weapons permits in many states (including Oregon), I wouldn’t suggest anyone using the credential to carry guns for defense without more robust defensive and legal training than the NRA pistol shooting course.  So (Step 4), I’ll also repeat the RSSK 301 concealed carry/self defense course from Paideia the week after the certification series.  It’s not required for the certificate, but about as strongly recommended as I can possibly make it.

Right now, it’s looking like this course will cost $40, and will be limited to 32 students.  [I should note that, including the self defense course, this series is about a $150-$200 value anywhere outside Reed.]  It’ll be an up-front fee, and it’ll be 50% refundable if you drop out, don’t pass, etc. (because the other $20 will already have been spent on your course materials, etc., which you may keep).  Your $40 covers your NRA training packet (textbook, other publications, test and certificate, and maybe a CD-ROM), shipping/handling/administration of the NRA packet, any filing fees with the NRA, shooting range fees, ammunition and gun rental for the range portion, and transportation to/from the range.

To sign up or for more info, e-mail RSSK (see top of page) as soon as possible.  We’re not running an online signup form for this course because I wanted to up our level of confidentiality in this case (and e-mail RSSK to hear more about the reasoning behind that).

So, here’s the schedule of events:

Step 0 – Thurs or Tues., Mar 25/30, 8:00pm, Eliot 314.

Basic RSSK training – come to one or the other.  Lasts ~1:30, and fulfills RSSK training requirement.  I’ll send out a description so you’ll be able to decide for yourself whether you need to attend (essentially, how much of the basic RSSK training do you remember).

Step 1 – Weds. or Thurs., Mar 31/Apr 1, 8:00pm, Eliot 314.

NRA info – come to one or the other.  There are two times so that you’ll be sure to make it to one.

Step 2 – Weds. or Thurs., Apr 7/8, 8:00pm, Eliot 314.

NRA info part 2 – come to one or the other.

Step 3 – Shooting Range Trip: afternoon of Sat., Apr. 10th

Logistics will be discussed in class.

Step 4 (optional but very important) –Wed. or Thurs., Apr 14/15, 8:00pm, Eliot 314

My self-defense/concealed carry curriculum.  Come to one or the other.

Weds., May. 5th - Shooting Range Field Trip (Reading week stress reliever!)

We’re going to the range!  Don’t forget your theses, hum finals, etc. because we’re gonna make holes in them.  Price is $10 for two hours of safe, coached shooting, 100+ rds. of ammo, and a safe place to shoot.

This event will use a lottery system: Watch your e-mail for signup details.
